San Giovanni Apostle’s Church

Locality: Colledimezzo
Address: centro storico
TAG: Churches

San Giovanni Apostle’s parish church is located in the old town of Colledimezzo in beautiful panoramic position; from the front of the facade there is a nice view of the Valley among which river Sangro flows. The time of the foundation of the Church, though certainly ancient, is not known with precision; currently its overall appearance is that of a holy building of late Baroque, probably of the mid-eighteenth century. However in the Church there are works of art that dates back to the 17th century.
The facade is delimited on both sides by Doric order pilasters, on which a top frieze cornice rests; the tympanum has a special design, typical of Baroque art, the side curves in a concave line, while the center presents a convexity. Equally complex are the cornices of the portal and of the window above it, both with curvilinear perimeters.
Also the Bell Tower, on the right side of the façade is characterized by a similar motif pilasters, while its pediment, consisting of wrought iron branches is of special effect.
The Interior confirms the facade style: among a profusion of stucco, gilding and artificial marble plasters, it is decorated by frescoes inspired by biblical episodes and characters. The barrel vault opens in lunettes which correspond to windows and it is divided in many areas by ogives placed on side pilasters.
At the intersection of the two arms of a Latin cross that forms the internal structure of the Church the hemispherical dome rises, also covered with frescoes. The main altar, separated from the nave by a marble balustrade, is surmounted by a painting representing the Crucifixion. Other works of art enrich the Church, including an ancient statue of the Madonna del Casale, another painting of the Madonna con Bambino tra San Francesco e il committente (purchaser) by Tanzio da Varallo, a famous 17th century Lombard painter, paintings of Theatine Donato Teodoro, found in side altars, chapels and transept. Note also the 18th century organ in the choir of the wall behind the facade, the pulpit, and the choir with carvings and bas-reliefs.
