Welcome to Mozzagrogna
The town of Mozzagrogna is located on scenic spur overlooking the Sangro Valley. The town, formerly called Villa Schiavone, arises as a result of the establishment of a group of Slavs in the 16th century, belonging to the Schiavoni, which were driven away from nearby Lanciano. Then takes its current name from a family from Lanciano which, like many others, owned villas inside the territory of Mozzagrogna, which was considered an elite place among the rich people of the ancient Anxanum. During World War II, being situated on the Gustav line was almost completely destroyed in the bombing, but the willing reconstruction by its inhabitants earned the village the Silver Medal of Civil Merit. In the small village of Abruzzo it is still possible to visit some beautiful churches, such as those dedicated to San Rocco and to Maria SantissimadellaVittoria, mansions, such as Villa Marcantonio, and the beautiful Castel of Septe, a fortress dating back to the Lombard era, today it is an hotel-restaurant. For Abruzzo’s cuisine food and wine lovers, the town of Mozzagrogna offers in July the Sagra of prosciutto, bread, olive oil and local wine.
