Welcome to Ortona
Looking out on a promontory overlooking the sea, in Abruzzo, lies the beautiful town of Ortona, a seafaring town of ancient origin. The town of Ortona was inhabited in antiquity by the italic population of Frentani that settled in the territory and made it their port which still represents one of the most important harbours of Abruzzo. During the war years, in 1943, in Ortona there was the opposite front and the destruction of the territory was almost totally. Proof of this historic event are still today the Castle, built by Alfonso of Aragon in 1445, the Battle Museum documenting the dramatic events of 1943 and the Cathedral of Saint Thomas the Apostle which was built in 1127 and also damaged during the World War II. The Cathedral is linked to a Art Gallery Museum with paintings from the 14th to the 17th century, archaeological fragments and objects of superior craftsmanship. By exploring the old town there is the Farnese Palace built in 1584 and today main location of the Cascella gallery. For religious turism lovers there are numerous churches to visit such like that of Santa Maria of Costantinopoli and the Church of Santa Trinità. Inside the former convent of Sant'Anna there is the War Museum various relics from the World War II. Situated along the Trabocchi coast, the town of Ortona, represents one of the most suggestive stretches of the coastline with the alternation of sandy beaches, beautiful coves and picturesque cliffs, ideal for an unforgettable beach holiday in Abruzzo.
