Welcome to Roio del Sangro

In the middle Valley of Sangro, on a spur of rock at the slope of Mount Lupara, lies the small town of Roio del Sangro. The oldest written record, historically ascertained, dates back to 1309, when its appeared in the documents of the diocesi of Trivento. In the following centuries, like most of the towns in the area, this small village of Abruzzo was fief of many gentlemen. The World War II saw the small town almost completely destroyed and unfortunately also the population was decimated. To visit  there is the enchanting Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, with baroque interior, probably built on a reconstruction of another Church, while of uncertain construction is the ancient church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari. The main feast days are the processions of San Filippo Neri and San Rocco on August 12th and 13th, the wild boar festival on August 7th and the good Friday procession.
