Welcome to Santa Maria Imbaro
The town of Santa Maria Imbaro lies on a rocky outcrop on the left bank of the Sangro river, in a hilly area intensively cultivated. The first written records of the village date back to the beginning of the year 1000, which describe the presence of the church dedicated to Santa Maria Imbaro, although, after archaeological excavations it was possible to attest to the presence of a small urban centre in Roman times. Around the 1200 was an area dedicated to a Hermitage, where were accommodated the pilgrims on their way. Later, around the Church grew the town that extended up to a serious earthquake in 1456. The town of Santa Maria Imbaro became independent in 1817. Worth visiting are the church dedicated to the Saint Patron, dating back to the 6th century, Acciarri Palace and the remains of the RegioTratturo L'Aquila-Foggia, which in the past centuries was passage of many pilgrims. Very interesting is the event which is held annually in July, which features a typical dish of SangroAventino: Sagra of Pallotte Cace e Ove.
