The Giò Pomodoro Fountain

Locality: Atessa
TAG: Fountains

Officially opened in the spring of 2005 the monumental Giò Pomodoro fountain is located in the centre of Piazza Oberdan. The large, open Piazza is the site of the daily market and is also a striking lookout point:  from the balcony of the piazza the magnificent view stretches all the way to the sea. The fountain, created with the stone from Gravina di Puglia, has a polygonal shape and contains within it a rhomboid shape, beneath a large bronze spiral, that shoots jets of water. The water is projected towards the valley and towards the sea, and metaphorically, towards infinity. A source of pride for the regional administration and the local citizens, the fountain is considered to be one of the most beautiful and meaningful examples of modern art in Abruzzo. The idea for the fountain in Piazza Oberdan dates back to 1982 but for many years the idea never took off. Pomodoro, the great maestro of contemporary art, had expressed his desire to bring his art to the people in the land of his origins. In 1996 Giorgio Pardi of the University of Pescara commissioned the project and the following year Pomodoro presented three draft proposals. The inauguration of the fountain took place in 2004, two years after the death of the great artist.
