Horizons by Costas Varotsos

Locality: Gessopalena
TAG: Other

On the road that leads from Torricella to Gessopalena to the eyes of the traveler suddenly appears Morgia a stunning scenery,  which amazes for the singularity of the elements of the landscape: a large boulder,  of gigantic dimensions, protruding from the slope of the hill that goes down towards the valley of the River Sangro. On this huge boulder folk legends intertwined: According to someone,  Morgia would be a spur of the Majella that the biblical hero Samson with superhuman strength, would have detached from the mountain and placed where is now. Samson also would have struck the boulder with a knee started the Aventino river with his urination. Another legend is about the image of a crouching lion  on the rock, so that among locals Morgia is called in dialect "lu lion". In fact, the isolated rock broke away from the Majella massif and then rolled to the valley and placed right there where now is located. Having served for a long time to obtain building material, the Morgia in 1998 was chosen as the basis of an installation by greek artist Costas Varotsos , that he called "Horizons",  with the will to combine the work with human physical reality of the territory.
