In the middle of the wild and inhospitable nature of the Vallaspra, located two kilometres from the city of Atessa, is the convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli. In 1430 , struck by the inspiring atmosphere of the location Friar Tomasso da Firenze proposed the construction of a convent around the ancient chapel known as locally as cona.  A parchment still housed in the library of the convent documents two important interventions to the building that occurred in 1666 and in 1700 relating to its new function as a wool mill. In 1860 the building became the property of the council and from this point it experienced a long period of decline. In 1936 after further restoration the church was run by a group of missionaries. Over the years, the convent of San Pasquale became an important centre for theological studies. The convent is built of irregular shaped stone and perforated brick. On the back wall of the porticato the fresco of the Pietà is still visible with the four saints by the side: San Giovanni and San Francesco on the right, the Maddalena and San Antonio da Padova on the left. The façade of the entrance to the church is divided horizontally by a cornice and is crowned with a small bell gable. The internal space is punctuated by giant columns with gold capitals that support an entablature that runs along the perimeter of the church. The main nave has a flat, coffered ceiling while the apse is decorated with pendentives and frescoes. The interior space opens onto a large chapel dedicated to San Pasquale containing a large wooden relic with the remains of Santa Liberata Martire, and other relics with some remains of San Tommaso and San Pasquale including a notable statue. Inside the church there are terracotta sculptures from the 1500s of Saint Francis of Assisi. At the centre of the double arched cloister is the ancient well of miracles. A visit to the convent is without doubt an inspiring experience where visitors can immerse themselves in a spiritual atmosphere while also enjoying a rich cultural experience.
