Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie

Locality: Rosello
TAG: Churches

In Contrada Macchie, next to the cemetery, in good panoramic position, stands the sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie. It consists of two side-by-side buildings: on the right there is a church which dates back to the early 18th century, and the other on the left can be dated to the 1960s.
The right side, less voluminous, has a rectangular structure; the facade is the only element that witnesses of its antiquity, since the Interior has been completely transformed. The facade has a horizontal crowning; the central portal is flanked by two small windows, according to a common building model in the region: they are called "fenestrelle devotionis", meaning "small windows of devotion", frequent churches placed outside built-up areas, almost always closed; the openings on the side of the door, to eye level, allow travellers to enter inside to say their prayers. The modern part of the facade of the sanctuary imitates the layout of the architectural elements of the contiguous part; therefore they repeat the forms, the portal, the lateral niches, the oeil-de-boeuf and the upper cornice, all realized in stucco.
The Interior consists of a rectangular hall, white plastered and decorated with gilt stuccoes and frames. The back wall is occupied by a painting representing the Madonna delle Grazie by unknown author, but probably dating back to the Neapolitan School of the 17th century.
