The Church of Immaculate Conception

Locality: San Vito Chietino
TAG: Churches

Described by Gabriele d’Annunzio in his Trionfo della Morte, San Vito Chietino is a recognised tourist destination due to the beauty of its beaches. Positioned strategically on a rocky hill that reaches down to the sea it offers a unique panorama that includes the Maiella massif, the Gran Sasso mountain and over to the town of Vasto. On Corso Matteoti inside the small town can be found the Church of the Immaculate Conception . Founded in the second half of the 1800s the building has a late 16th century style façade, built in 1910 as can be read in the inscription on the entrance. There is a travertine staircase leading up to the façade. The two niches above the two lateral entrances house statues of San Vito and Pope John the 13th. The bell tower created at the back of the church is punctuated by floor-marking cornices. The interior has Corinthian columns in a Greek cross shape with semicircular apses. There is also a dome positioned on a tall cylindrical space. The church still houses works of  jewellery from the 15th century including a silver cross and some canvases from the 15th-16th centuries.
