The town of Rocca San Giovanni is recognized as "one of the most beautiful villages in Italy", placed between the mountains and the sea. The ancient village was founded in 1076 to defend of the Abbey of Rocca San Giovanni in Venere in Fossacesia from Normans of Puglia and from Turks. Due to large damage, a few centuries later werebuilt other tower and a new stronger walls. Subject of looting and hostilities was also badly damaged in two earthquakes (in 1456 and in 1627), forcing the inhabitants to a large reconstruction of the village. Damages, which are still visible, date back to bombing in World War II in 1943. By visiting the town it is obvious the medieval style: the walls, the Castle and the Church of Patron Saint Matthew are still present. For seafood lovers of the Abruzzo cuisine, at the beach front of Roccasan Giovanni there are numerous Trabocchi on which you can also dine while enjoying an atmosphere and a panorama unique in its kind. The events of the town of Rocca San Giovannni are mostly related to the summer season, called "Summer Roccolana". First of all there is the appointment with "GustandoRocca” connected to the culinary sphere and the CalcioBalilla tournament at the main square. Another event of national importance is “Rocca San Giovanni in Jazz”, to which annually participate many people from all over the world.
